A race for four-year-old and over mares at weight-for-age, the Stock Stakes has been won by some outstanding G1 performers in the past.
The likes of G1 winners Tuesday Joy, Devil Moon, Zarita, She’s Archie, Sunday Joy, Arctic Scent and Alcove have all won the mile contest in recent years. With Avienus holding entries to the big three – the G1 Cox Plate, G1 Caulfield Cup and the G1 Melbourne Cup, there appears to be a good chance that the Mark Webb-trained mare is capable of running a big race in any of them and adding to her Stakes record.
One of the most successful sire sons of the legendary Zabeel, Reset (pictured) is currently the leading sire in Victoria based on prizemoney, while he also has a higher winners to runners ratio than any of the stallions above him on the overall general sires table. The sire of two Stakes winners so far this season, only fellow Zabeel-line stallion and Darley stallion Lonhro has had more.
Having sired 15 individual winners so far this season, there appears to be many progeny of Reset who look likely Spring candidates including last the start winner Pinker Pinker. Trained by Greg Eurell, the filly has had two starts for three wins highlighted by her short neck win down the Flemington straight where she left the G1 Blue Diamond runner-up Shaaheq in her wake.
Nominated for the upcoming G1 Thousand Guineas in a few weeks time, a victory by Pinker Pinker would give Reset his seventh Stakes winner worldwide.
An undefeated dual G1–winning sprinter-miler, Reset is the sire of dual G1 Derby winner Rebel Raider from first crop and the G1 Australian Guineas runner up Set For Fame from his second. Standing the current season at Darley Northwood Park, Reset will once again cover a high-class book of mares at a fee of $22,000 including GST.
