Queensland Day Stakes to Mohave
Making his Queensland Winter Carnival debut, three-year-old Exceed And Excel gelding Mohave defied all challengers down the home straight to defeat She’s Miss Devine and Durendal (Medaglia d'Oro) in the Listed Queensland Day Stakes over 1200m.
Heading forward from a wide gate, jockey James McDonald had the Godolphin gelding settled in a wide position, although racing handy to the lead.
Taking the front around the home turn, Mohave continued to defy all challengers to maintain his lead and hold off the late charges from back in the field to claim his second Stakes victory.
Bred by Darley, Mohave is the first named foal out of the G3 placed Margham and comes from the family of G1 performers Desert Vixen, Valid Appeal, Real Shadai and Millennium. Margham foaled a Commands colt in October last year and is set to foal a full relation to Mohave this season.
The sire of 10 G1 winners, Exceed And Excel will stand the forthcoming season at Kelvinside for a fee of $110,000 (inc. GST), alongside his G2-winning, G1 placed son Sidestep who will cover his first book at a fee of $11,000 (inc. GST) , while Kuroshio and Helmet will stand at Northwood Park at fees of $8,800 (inc. GST) and $33,000 (inc. GST) respectively.
