Medaglia d’Oro filly tops Fasig-Tipton Saratoga at $1.575 million
At the end of the 2012 edition of Fasig-Tipton’s Saratoga Select Sale, it was the Darley sires leading the way with six of the top 10 highest-priced offerings. Medaglia d'Oro and Street Cry completed the sales exacta with the top two prices and, with Bernardini, combined for four more in the top 10.
It should come as no big surprise that the sales topper at the sale was for a yearling sired by Medaglia d’Oro. After all, he’s sired more sales or session toppers since 2007 than any other North American sire. The US$1.575 million-dollar price for the bay filly out of multiple G1 winner Wait A While was paid by Todd Pletcher, agent, purchased from the consignment of Three Chimneys Sales.
The very next lot through the sale was a filly, also by Medaglia d’Oro, another beautiful yearling which is the first foal out of Stakes winner/G2-placed West Coast Spring. Consigned by Denali Stud, agent, she was purchased by Live Oak Plantation for US$725,000.
But the sire of Rachel Alexandra wasn’t done yet. Hip number 149, a dark bay or brown filly and the second foal out of multiple G1 winner Bsharpsonata, reached a final bid of US$650,000 and was purchased by Shadwell Estate Company. She was consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds LLC acting as agent for Cloverleaf Farms II.
Bernardini is another Darley sire who continues to command respect in the nation’s sales ring with six-figure yearlings that included a US$700,000 offering, hip number 169, from the barn of Four Star Sales, agent. Rick Porter signed for the handsome bay that comes for an extensive black type family. Bernardini was also represented by a US$325,000 filly from the consignment of Romans Racing and Sales, agent. Out of the multiple Stakes winner Uninhibited Song, the January foal was purchased by G.T.C. LLC. Earlier in the sale, it was a Street Cry yearling who lit up the tote board at US$600,000. Consigned by Lane’s End, agent, this dark bay or brown colt is out of the G1 winner Sweet Talker and was taken home by Third Street Stable. On the first day of the sale, Street Cry was represented by a US$1.2 million yearling, as mentioned before, a price second only to the US$1.575 million dollar yearling sired by stud mate Medaglia d’Oro. Another Street Cry yearling reached a final bid of US$400,000 on Tuesday night, a colt that is a full-brother to multiple G1 winner and record-setter Street Boss. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agent, the bay colt was purchased by John Ferguson on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed. One of the first yearlings through the sale was a filly by other Darley sire Street Boss, sold by Eaton Sales, agent, and bought by Tom McCrocklin, agent for US$200,000. Out of Stakes winner Stage Stop, this filly is a half-sister to G3 winner She Digs Me and Stakes-placed 2012 two-year-old Mylute.
