Last seen finishing runner-up in the G3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot following a debut maiden win at Newmarket in May, Mawj broke alertly and went straight to the front under jockey Ray Dawson in the six-furlong contest. She held on gamely in the final strides to win by a half-length over last out Listed winner Lezoo.Â
A homebred for Godolphin, Mawj is the third Black Type winner for her dam Modern Ideals. The daughter of New Approach is also the dam of multiple G1 winner Modern Games and Listed winner and G3-placed Modern News. Modern Ideals is a half-sister to French Champion two-year-old Ultra and G3 scorer Synopsis, and out of a daughter of Italian Champion Proskana. She is a half-sister to the dam of Champions Bosra Sham and Hector Protector, and from the extended family of record-breaking Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Medaglia d'Oro).
Mawj is the 198th Stakes winner and the 99th Group winner for Exceed and Excel, who will stand at Kelvinside, NSW, in 2022 for a service fee of $132,000, including GST.
