The excellent start to the current campaign by second-season sire Lonhro continued on Wednesday when the Peter Snowden-trained filly Siphon credited the former Horse of the Year with his latest metropolitan winner.
Siphon finished second on her only start at two and there was plenty of confidence behind her here on her resumption after a recent win in a trial. Ridden with confidence by Corey Brown, she justified favouritism with a good win over the 1250m.
Still lightly raced, she has thus provided her dam with the perfect start to her breeding career: she is the first foal of the winning Encosta De Lago mare Soda Water, who is a half-sister to Group Three winners Intelligent Star and Blaze The Turf and who hails from the family of Group One winners Bint Marscay, Filante, Kenny’s Best Pal, Stella Cadente and Benicio.
Lonhro’s first batch of two-year-olds last season included the Stakes performers Black Minx, Shadrach, Minnesota Shark and Segolene, and he has already made a great start with his first three-year-olds, highlighted by the win of Minnesota Shark in the Mitchell McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley last month.
