Currently the leading third-season sire, 11-time G1 winner Lonhro recorded his latest stakes winner at Hawkesbury when Serenissima defeated her stablemate and paternal half-sister Renaissance in the Listed 2010 Darley Crown.
Racing in the silks of Sheikh Mohammed, Serenissima sat just off the leading duo before making her run heading for home. Ridden by Josh Parr, also jockey of last Saturday’s G1 Champagne Stakes winner Skilled (Commands), the four-year-old mare held a three-quarter length margin over Renaissance in the $100,000 fillies and mares event.
Stakes-placed on two previous occasions, the victory of the Peter Snowden-trained four-year-old mare gave Lonhro his third winner of the day after the earlier victories of Dysphonia and Pinwheel.
Out of the Stakes-winning Quest For Fame mare Santissima, Serenissima was bred by Woodlands Stud. The winner of six races, Santissima is a half-sister to the multiple G1 winner Freemason, from the family of G1 winner Undue (Commands).
Later in the day, three-year-old colt Khas Kura gave Lonhro his 32nd Stakes horse with a strong finishing burst to take second in the Listed Hawkesbury Guineas.
Standing at Kelvinside at a fee of $88,000 this season, Lonhro holds down a top-five position on the general sires’ table with progeny earnings in excess of $5million. Having already sired 11 individual Stakes winners so far this season, Lonhro’s black type tally ranks second behind only Redoute’s Choice.
