Long John makes short work of rivals at Meydan

Although he had been away from the track for over three months, Street Cry’s top-class son Long John was no worse for the wear as he ran away from the field in the UAE Derby prep race bringing to six the number of wins he’s registered in his nine career starts.

The four-year-old gelding, bred by Darley and owned by Godolphin, settled in nicely in mid-pack until the field rounded the turn for home. At that point, the favourite sprinted clear from the rest and held a comfortable four-length advantage on the line.

Long John became the 14th G1 winner for his sire last year when he recorded a half-length victory in the G1 Caulfield Guineas on October 12. His sire’s 15th career winner at the highest level came the next month when two-year-old New Year's Day captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita in the United States.

Out of the Night Shift mare Hosiery, a three-quarter sister to the Stakes place Mielleuse and a half-sister to the Hong Kong-G1 Hong Kong Gold Cup winner Masked, Long John is a half-brother to the Listed Breeder’s Plate winner Ribald, a son of Darley Australia stallion Strategic.

Street Cry’s 68 other Stakes winners include Horse of the Year Zenyatta, Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, multiple G1 winner Whobegotyou and Darley stallion Street Boss.

Street Cry has four yearlings catalogued for the Melbourne Premier yearling sale which begins on Sunday week, while Street Boss has eight yearlings entered.
