Hence overcame a poor start with an impressive last-to-first victory in the Downs At Albuquerque Handicap 4 Aug.
It marked the second time that the four-year-old son of Street Boss captured a Stakes race in New Mexico. The chestnut colt won the G3 Sunland Derby in 2017.
Off a step slowly from the starting gate, Hence dropped back to last shortly after the start. Trailing the field by as many as six lengths on the backstretch, Hence began to rally on the far turn, closing rapidly on the leaders while racing wide. The Steve Asmussen trainee took control at the three-sixteenth pole, eventually drawing off to win by six-and-a-half lengths.
Racing as a homebred for Calumet Farm, Hence is out of Floating Island, by A.P. Indy. Floating Island is a half-sister to multiple Graded Stakes winner Pico Teneriffe (by Red Ransom), the dam of two-time Canadian Champion Older Horse, Marchfield.
In addition to Hence, Street Boss is the sire of such standouts as Rapper Dragon, Horse of the Year in Hong Kong and winner of the Hong Kong Derby (a local G1) and the G2 Chairman’s Trophy; Cathryn Sophia, winner of the 2016 G1 Kentucky Oaks, and Decked Out, winner of the G1 American Oaks.
Street Boss will stand the upcoming breeding season at Northwood Park at a fee of $27,500 (inc. GST).
