Two-year-old Lonhro colt Souchez made all the running on 12 March at Rosehill in the G2 Pago Pago Stakes, winning impressively and booking his place in the G1 Golden Slipper over the same course seven days later.
Having just his third career start and coming off a third placing at G2 level, Souchez bounced straight to the lead from his inside barrier and never relinquished it, holding off several challengers to score a brilliant victory.
Bred by Darley, Souchez is the first foal to race out of Stakes-placed Redoute’s Choice mare Vimy, a daughter of G1-winning sprinter Regimental Gal. Vimy has a yearling filly by Street Cry but unfortunately died last spring after foaling a Sepoy colt.
Souchez is the 59th Stakes winner for Lonhro who is the sire of seven G1 winners including Darley stallions Denman and Benfica as well as Champion two-year-old Pierro who claimed the G1 Golden Slipper in his juvenile year.
