Fulbright sparkles in G2 Challenge Stakes
Fulbright has been a fantastic campaigner for his sire Exceed And Excel, becoming a Stakes winner on only his third start and in the opening race of Newmarket’s Future Champions Day he added a first Group victory in tenacious style, landing the 1400m G2 Challenge Stakes.
Settled under Joe Fanning just behind Red Jazz (who won this race in 2010), the Mark Johnston-trained colt was asked to challenge once entering the final two furlongs and battled brilliantly to win more easily than the neck margin would suggest.
This was his eighth career victory and third at Black type level, having won the Listed Woodcote Stakes at two and the Fortune Stakes at Sandown earlier this year.
Bred by R F and S D Knipe, Fulbright is out of the winning Fairy King mare Lindfield Belle, making him a half-brother to smart sprinter Baltic King and G3 winner Domingues.
Exceed And Excel has now sired 19 Group winners worldwide – four of whom have won at the highest level including new Darley recruit Helmet, a dual G1 winner at two who went on to win the Caulfield Guineas in record time at three.
Exceed And Excel stands at Kelvinside at a fee of $66,000 including GST, while Helmet stands at Northwood Park at $33,000 including GST.
