Stuart Ramsey is nothing of not a straight talker – and he talks with unswerving directness about his three-horse draft of Darley-inspired yearlings at this week’s Inglis Easter Sale.
Ramsey’s Turangga Farm has consigned a pair of colts by Teofilo who are the result of his purchase of two broodmares he acquired with the stallion in mind.
“I bought them both because I wanted to send some nice mares to Teofilo because I regard him as one the world’s best,” Ramsay said.
An owner whose colours have been carried to G1 victories by the likes of Ancient Song (Slanger Stakes), Sky Cuddle (Emirates Stakes) and Cinque Cento (Doomben Cup), Ramsay chose the mares Nahayan and Rose O’ War for the matings, and he’s delighted with the results.
Nahayan, a daughter of Zabeel from the family of the G1-winning brothers Field Dancer and Just A Dancer, was a $250,000 purchase as a broodmare who had produced five winners from her six foals to race.
Her yearling by Teofilo is catalogued as Lot 147.
“I’ve had high hopes for him since before he was foaled and I like him more every day,” Ramsay said.
“He’s the result of an outstanding mating.”
Ramsay’s second Teofilo colt, Lot 228, who will go through the sale ring early on Wednesday, is out of the Danehill mare Rose O’ War
Rose O’ War has the distinction of being the first horse to defeat the champion filly Sunline.
She won six more races, three at Stakes level, and has added to that record by producing nine winners from 10 foals to race.
“I bought her for a song, so I’m happy about that,” Ramsay said.
The third member of the Turangga draft isn’t by a Darley stallion, but is closely connected to more than one of them.
The filly catalogued as Lot 52 is by Written Tycoon from Impeach, whose granddam Peach is the granddam of G1 Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi (Sidestep).
Peach also produced the G1 winner and Darley stallion Denman, and the G1 winner Preserve among her 12 winners from 13 foals to race.
