Darley stallion Medaglia d’Oro has produced the first seven-figure yearling of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.
The colt out of the G1-winning mare Peggy Jean went to the $1 million bid of Japanese buyer Marie Yoshida.
Bidding began at $200,000 and quickly advanced in a spirited bidding duel principally involving Ms Yoshida and leading agent Guy Mulcaster.
Ms Yoshida said the colt was the first she inspected and the first she marked as a prospective purchase.
“This horse was just splendid. We decided in 30 seconds that we would buy him,” she said.
The colt offered by Widden Stud is from the family of G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Lady Jakeo and G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis.
Among other notable offerings in the first hour of Australia’s first sale of the year were the first Kermadec yearlings, with Lot 26, a filly from the Commands mare Previous selling for $240,000.
The filly offered by Attunga Stud, went to prominent Hong Kong buyer George Moore.
Another early Kermadec offering, a chestnut colt from the Pins mare Pimms Time, catalogued as Lot 13, went for $140,000 to Mulcaster and leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller, who also trained his sire.
The colt was consigned by Kulani Park.
