The world’s best sire of two-year-olds, Exceed And Excel, again stamped his mark when speedy colt Zulfiqar saluted in his second Stakes race in the G3 Chairman's Stakes over 1,000m at Sandown, defeating Veecee and Tacito.
Late last year Zulfiqar was an impressive winner of the Listed Darley Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington.
He was able to burst from the barriers with Ben Melham in the saddle, crossed to lead and fought off the late challenge from Veecee.
"He's a very sensible horse. He was strong on the line and through the line, and that is very important for the Diamond," Ben Melham said.
The G3 Chairman's Stakes has always been a stepping stone to G1 glory with Extreme Choice taking out this race in 2016.
Exceed And Excel has had a spectacular start to the two-year-old 2022/2023 season. His results include:
- Golden Gift winner: Barber
- Stakes winners: Zulfiqar (G3) & Sky On Fire (L)
- Stakes-placed: Excel d'Or (G3), Summer Loving (MM 2YO Classic), Cylinder (L), Mach Ten (G3) & Aditi (L)
Exceed And Excel recently reached two lofty milestones, siring 200 individual Stakes race winners and 100 individual Group winners.
The stallion has now sired 564 two-year-old winners, including 85 individual Stakes winners and 44 individual Group winners.
Exceed And Excel spearheaded the Darley stallion roster in 2022 at Kelvinside in the NSW Hunter Valley.
