Cyrus Alexander rallied in the stretch, getting up in the shadow of the wire to win the PA Derby Champion Stakes by a head at Parx Racing.
Settled just off the pace through the early stages of the race, the four-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro saved ground while scraping paint along the rail. Angled to the outside with a furlong to run, Cyrus Alexander closed resolutely through the stretch to win by a head.
Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Cyrus Alexander was purchased by Spendthrift Farm and Stonestreet Stables for $1,700,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September Yearling sale. Cyrus Alexander is out of Supercharger, making him a half-brother to 2010 G1 Kentucky Derby winner, Super Saver, and to Brethren, winner of the G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes. Supercharger is a full-sister to G1 winner and Darley stallion, Girolamo, and to Daydreaming, winner of the G2 Top Flight Handicap.
Medaglia d'Oro has earned a spot among North American's leading sires once again in 2016 with undefeated, seven-time G1 winner and Eclipse Champion Songbird proudly carrying her sire’s banner in style. Three-year-old son Astern proved himself the best of his age group in Australia on September 10th with a resounding victory in the G1 Golden Rose. He has now sired a total of 15 G1 winners around the world.
Medaglia d’Oro stands at Kelvinside for a fee of $110,000 inc GST.
