Calamba wins in good style
The day after Bernardini's three-year-old daughter Via Villaggio won the G3 Railbird Stakes at Hollywood Park to become the 10th Graded or Group winner for her sire, the Anthony Cummings trained filly Calamba won in good style at Randwick, defeating Hawkspur and fellow Bernadini two-year-old Toydini in third.
The Gooree Pastoral-homebred two-year-old proved too good for her rivals at the end of the 1300m event and should improve over further with her dam Sadler's Girl a three-quarter sister to Irish 2000 Guineas and Breeders' Cup Mile winner Barathea.
An exciting young son of AP Indy, Bernardini has gotten off to the best start at stud by an American sire since 1973. Via Villagio joins Bernardini's 10 Graded Stakes winners, who include G1 winners Stay Thirsty and To Honor And Serve. He is the sire of four G1 winners to date and an incredible eight G1 horses.
In Australia Bernardini's oldest offspring are two-year-olds and include the G2 placed Meidung along with the city winners Calamba, Boban and Toydini.
Bernardini will stand atthe forthcoming southern hemisphere breeding season at Darley Kelvinside at a fee of $55,000 (inc. GST).
