The recent consistency of Athiri was rewarded at Randwick on Saturday when the mare broke through for her first Stakes win in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap that made her the 90th Stakes winner for Lonhro.
In a career that had produced three wins and five Stakes placings prior to her latest effort, Athiri had maintained a standard that placed her in the well-above-average category.
But since graduating to open-age contests this season, she has consolidated her form, with the Razor Sharp victory her third from her past four starts.
A clean getaway had Athiri on the back of the leader after 50 metres and she arrived at the 400m with jockey Rachel King swinging against her.
King allowed her to stride coming to the 300m and she quickly took control and maintaining a two-length advantage on the line over Southern Lad with Tactical Advantage in third place.
Athiri, who placed three times in Stakes races as a two-year-old is the third foal of the winning Redoute’s Choice mare Retsina and is a half-sister to the Stakes winner Savatiano (Street Cry).
Lonhro completed his latest season at Darley’s Kelvinside Stud in NSW in 2020 at a fee of $66,000, including GST.
