After a troubled, yet third-place finish in his first start, Street Sense’s two-year-old colt Afford was made the crowd favorite in Chicago in his second trip to the post on November 16 and didn’t disappoint his backers.
After moving from fourth to third at the half-mile mark, Afford then took aim at the leaders as the field entered the turn, and by the time the field hit the top of the stretch, he slowly began to draw off to an eventual seven and one-quarter-length win. In doing so, he becomes the tenth career winner for his Kentucky Derby-winning sire Street Sense.
Afford was bred by his owner, James Tafel, who also raced Street Sense throughout his career. Afford is out of the Unbridled mare, Unaffordable, who is now the dam of six winners from her first six foals. Unaffordable is a half-sister to G3 winner/G1-placed Til Forbid as well as other Stakes winners Cinch, Hold Old Blue and Red And White.
Also two-year-old champion and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner, Street Sense has sired eight other winners including Motor City, winner of the G3 Iroquois Cup last month, as well as G1-placed Miss Netta. He was also the leading freshman sire of 2011 at North America’s two-year-old in-training sales.
Street Sense is standing the southern hemisphere breeding season at Darley Kelvinside for $38,500 (inc GST).
