After finishing in the runner-up position to fellow Darley stallion Exceed And Exceed in his first two seasons at stud, Lonhro hit his straps being crowned the Leading third-season sire of his year, and he has now progressed even further – sitting in third position on the General sires table, a position he took last year as well.
A Champion racehorse himself, winning 11 times at G1 level and amassing over $5.7million in Stakes earnings, Lonhro retired to stud with a massive boom. His early promise flourished into excellence with 15 Stakes horses by the end of his second year including Denman, Demerit, Dysphonia and Trim, to name but a few.
As his second crop turned three, and the progressive colt Denman emerged as a serious contender for the G1 Golden Rose, the first race at the elite level for that racing season, Lonhro became the word on the tip of everyone's tongue. Denman scored a convincing win in the G3 Run To The Rose and went to the post in the G1 Golden Rose as a short-priced favourite. Defeating a class field which included the G1 Golden Slipper one-two finish of the year prior, Denman became his sires’ flag-bearer.
Currently the leading sire of three-year-olds in Australia, Lonhro has sired 21 individual Stakes winners to date from five crops to race, and a further 19 which have performed at Stakes level. Sitting in third position on the General sires table, Lonhro goes into the upcoming Easter yearling sales with 16 catalogued.
The first lot by the Champion racehorse through the ring will be offered by Makybe. Catalogued as lot 65, the bay filly is a full-brother to winning siblings Lonaro and Breitling. From the family of Stakes winners Happy Giggle, Livelihood, Living Spirit, Schubert and Only She Can, this filly is bred on the same Danehill/Lonhro cross which has produced Stakes winners Obsequious, Deer Valley and Pinwheel.
Everyone dreams of having a G1 Golden Slipper winner and lot 255, a brown filly from the draft of Segenhoe Stud could just fit the bill. Out of the winning Snippets mare French Cut, a half-sister to the G1 Golden Slipper winner and now successful sire Stratum, this filly has the blood of a further two Golden Slipper winners in Vain and Luskin Star coursing through her veins.
Another yearling from the draft of Makybe that is sure to create plenty of interest enters the ring mid-way through day two as lot 266. Out of the Stakes-performing El Moxie mare Gold Chant, this colt’s dam is a half-sister to Champion Sprinter Starspangledbanner and comes from the family of G1 winners Circles Of Gold, Elvstroem and Haradasun.
Consigned by Shipton Lodge, lot 461 will be offered on the final day of the three day sale and is one not to miss. Out of the multiple Listed-winning Brief Truce mare Brief Kiss, this colt is closely related to dual G1 winner Rebel Raider (Reset) and G3 winner Shamoline Warrior (Shamardal), as well as Hong Kong Champion Miler Able One (Cape Cross).
A little over 50 lots later, the final Lonhro colt of the sale will be offered as lot 515. Consigned by Yarraman Park Stud, the black or brown colt is out of the G2 winner Mamzelle Pedrille, making him a full-brother to G2 Chelmsford Stakes winner O’Lonhro. With two stallions, O’Lonhro and I Am Invincible in the family, this colt surely has residual value as a stallion prospect upon his retirement from racing.
With Lonhro having entries in a large portion of the major autumn races over the coming weeks, the success of his stock on the track is sure to create even further interest in the outstanding stallion, therefore why not take a look at what he has on offer at the upcoming sales?
